The FIPS 140-2 Option for SNMP Managers

When product specifications for internet management require compliance with the FIPS 140-2 encryption standards, project engineers can look to SNMP Research's products that now offer access to FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic libraries as an option.

The FIPS 140-2 Enhanced BRASS Management Development Kit embeds a FIPS 140-2 validated OpenSSL cryptographic module into the BRASS code. The validated OpenSSL FIPS 140-2 module provides the cryptographic services in the BRASS Server by replacing the standard cryptographic code available in BRASS.

The user may select either the standard cryptographic services for his network, or he may choose the FIPS option for his network. If he chooses FIPS, then another option becomes available. That is, if there is a requirement to use the FIPS services, AES and SHA-1, with some networked nodes, while using non-FIPS compliant DES or MD5 with other networked nodes, then this configuration can be used. When using FIPS 140-2 standards, MD5 and DES are considered non-secure. MD5 and DES are widely available within SNMPv3 compliant agents.

Using the FIPS 140-2 compliant cryptographic libraries does not add discernible performance differences or reduce access to other features available within either the manager. Management applications previously compiled with the BRASS Management Application development kit will work with the FIPS 140-2 Enhanced BRASS Management Development Kit.

The FIPS 140-2 option can be licensed with SNMP Research's Manager Products:

This product includes software developed by the OpenSSL Project for use in the OpenSSL Toolkit (http://www.openssl.org/).

This product includes cryptographic software written by Eric Young (eay@cryptsoft.com).
